HANS JOACHIM BREUSTEDT

1901 Born on 16 September as the son of Wilhelm Breustedt and Johanna Rothammel in Steinach/Thuringia.
1916 Attends the industrial school in Sonneberg until Easter 1917.
1917 Apprenticeship with painter Adolf Büger in Munich.
In autumn, studied painting at the Grand Ducal Saxon Academy of Fine Arts in Weimar under Walther Klemm.
1919 Student of Lyonel Feininger at the State Bauhaus in Weimar.
1920 Departs for Italy in October. He stays there until early 1924.
1921 Birth of his son Michael from his relationship with Else Heinrich in Weimar.
Meets the Polish painter Sofia Vorzimer in Italy.
1922 Birth of daughter Marysia in Florence in February. Marries Sofia Vorzimer in August.
1924 Returns from Italy. Continues his studies at the Staatliches Bauhaus. In the winter semester of 1924/25, transfers to the State Academy of Fine Arts. Master student of Walther Klemm.
1928 Completes his studies. Stays in Italy, Ticino and Poland.
1929-32 Drawing teacher at the free school community in Wickersdorf, Thuringia.
1932 Freelance artist in Weimar.
1938 Expelled from the Reichskammer der bildenden Künste, banned from working and exhibiting.
1939 Moves to Warsaw in June to await the opportunity to emigrate to the USA. Outbreak of the Second World War.
1940 Leaves Poland in January. From February main residence in Vöcklabruck, Upper Austria. From October military service in the Wehrmacht. Russian campaign.
1942 Death of his wife in Treblinka.
1945 scape from Russian captivity. Returns to Vöcklabruck after a short period in American captivity.
1946 Acquaintance with the Austrian artist Margret Bilger.
1950 Austrian citizenship.
1953 Marriage to Margret Bilger. Moves to Taufkirchen/Pram. He lived here, interrupted by longer stays with his daughter in Vevey, until 1981.
1971 Death of his second wife Margret Bilger.
1981 Final settlement in Vevey.
1984 Died on 28 September.
